The other day I was struck by two verses that have rocked my world. Read them both…
Joshua 6:26 – “Then Joshua charged them at that time, saying, ‘Cursed be the man before the Lord who rises up and builds this city Jericho; he shall lay its foundation with his firstborn, and with his youngest he shall set up its gates.’”
Several hundred years later…..
1 Kings 16:34 – “In his days Hiel of Bethel built Jericho. He laid its foundation with Abiram his firstborn, and with his youngest son Segub he set up its gates, according to the word of the Lord, which He had spoken through Joshua the son of Nun.”
God takes His covenants seriously. Notice that God didn’t stop Hiel from building the city. Hiel simply lost his family in the process of building it. This is what happens when we put more importance on career than calling. We’re called to be husbands and wives, dads and moms. But if we lose sight of our primary calling because we’re pursuing a career then we’ll become just like Hiel. We’ll lose that which is most important to us. Yea, we may have riches and fame and influence and all that stuff, but we lost our family. Is that really a price we’re willing to pay?
The question is – “what’s your Jericho?” What are you trying to build? Let’s commit to not being like Hiel.
I shared this in our Bible study Thursday. Take 4 mins to listen in…
