We all know the story of Abraham leaving his homeland and going to Canaan in response to God’s call. But what we don’t often hear is how Abe’s dad, Terah, is the one who wanted to go to Canaan first. He set out for Canaan but he stopped short in Haran (Genesis 11:31). There he took up residence and ultimately died.
Abe, on the other hand, when he set out for Canaan years later was able to see it through. He made it to the place he journeyed toward, not stopping short like his dad did.
One guy accomplished his goal but the other didn’t.
So what was the difference between the two? FAITH!
Terah was not a believer in God but Abe was. Abe was called by God to go but Terah went on his own initiative. Abe was motivated by faith in God’s promise, which kept him moving toward his goal even when the going got tough. Terah was motivated by his own ambition, which gave him no strength to make it through the tough times.
This is important to consider now that the new year is upon us. What are your goals for this year? Are they inspired by God or born out of your own ambition? Are you operating by faith in God or are you relying on your own strength? The answer will determine whether you end up accomplishing what it is you set out to accomplish.
Only faith will empower a person to stay the course.
