Beans & Cornbread

By Tori Benham

“So Pa, what is your favorite meal of all time?” I asked my 82-year-old grandfather after his retirement party, trying to get him excited for his big trip south to live near all of us.

“Funny you ask Darling,” he began as he cocked his head and focused past me with a gentle smile on his face, his eyes squinting in concentration.

“I was just thinking about when God called me to be a pastor 60 years ago. I had always thought I would be a big businessman and make a lot of money, but then God called me to be a pastor. I remember this moment where I said, ‘Ok God, even if I have to eat beans and cornbread for the rest of my life, I’ll do what you’ve asked me to do.’

His eyes lowered to mine and with a big smile that turned into a laugh, he answered my question, “so you want to know what my favorite meal of all time is? Beans and cornbread! It’s God’s honest truth. I just love beans and cornbread!”

The words of Psalm 37:4 came alive in my heart that day. “Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” What a priceless gift to see the reward of truth lived out in this man two generations before me! A man whom I’ve had the privilege of watching delight in the Lord my whole life.

And so I’m learning. Desire is something that follows delight. Delight is the here and now. It’s embracing His “presence” and call here and now over pursuing His “presents” for us. It’s about what we have with Him not what we can get from Him.

We get this all backwards in our consumer world, don’t we? We pursue what we desire but miss the delight to be found in Him now. But when we let delight lead, we might just come to find that beans and cornbread really hit the spot! Thanks, Pa.

My goal is to help you in your battle—for your marriage and your kids. I’ve discovered that my best battle buddy is my husband, Jason, when we choose to fight alongside one another and not against each other. Fighting together draws us together. This is exactly why Satan wants to divide us. But we cannot let that happen, and neither can you. I promise I will write from my heart whatever God gives me, and hopefully this sharing will help both of us. The Lord knows I need it as much as anyone!
